Silver vs. Gold Vermeil Jewellery: Which Lasts Longer, and How to Care for Each

When you're choosing between sterling silver and gold vermeil jewellery, the decision often comes down to look, budget, and how much upkeep you're willing to do. Here's what actually separates the two.

What is Sterling Silver?

Sterling silver is 92.5% pure silver alloyed with other metals (usually copper) for strength — which is why you'll often see it stamped “925.” It has a bright, cool-toned shine and is the base metal for most of our pieces at Ratnali Jewels, including our bracelets and bangles and rings.

What is Gold Vermeil?

Gold vermeil is sterling silver that's been plated with a thick layer of real gold (by law in the UK and US, vermeil must have at least 2.5 microns of gold plating over sterling silver). This gives you the warm look of gold jewellery at a fraction of the cost of solid gold, while still being more durable than standard gold-plated base metal because of the thickness of the plating and the quality of the silver underneath.

Which Lasts Longer?

Solid sterling silver, left unplated, will last indefinitely with proper care — though it will naturally tarnish over time and needs occasional polishing. Gold vermeil's lifespan depends on how well the gold layer is protected: with proper care, a good-quality vermeil piece can look brilliant for years, but the gold layer can wear thinner with heavy daily use, exposure to moisture, or contact with chemicals.

How to Care for Both

• Store pieces separately in a soft pouch or lined box to prevent scratching.
• Remove jewellery before swimming, showering, or applying perfume and lotion.
• Clean gently with a soft, dry cloth — avoid harsh polishing cloths on vermeil, as they can wear away the gold layer.
• Take rings and bracelets off before exercising or manual work.
