Polki vs. Kundan Jewellery: What's the Difference (And Which Suits You)?

If you've shopped for Indian bridal jewellery, you've likely seen the terms “Polki” and “Kundan” used interchangeably. They're related, but they're not the same thing — and knowing the difference will help you choose the right piece for your wedding, reception, or festive occasion.

What is Polki?

Polki refers to uncut, natural diamonds that are polished but not faceted like modern brilliant-cut diamonds. Because the stones aren't cut into precise facets, Polki jewellery has a softer, more organic sparkle rather than the sharp fire of a cut diamond. Polki has been used in Indian royal jewellery for centuries, traditionally set in gold with a lac (resin) base.

Today, Polki-style jewellery is also created using high-grade cubic zirconia and simulated stones set by hand to recreate that same uncut, antique look — making the aesthetic accessible without the cost of natural uncut diamonds. What is Kundan?

Kundan is a setting technique, not a stone. It refers to the traditional method of setting gemstones into gold foil, giving pieces a layered, jewel-toned richness. Kundan work is often combined with Polki — you'll frequently see “Polki-Kundan” sets that use both the uncut-diamond look and the foil-setting technique together, especially in bridal chokers and jadau necklaces.

Which One Should You Choose?

If you want a piece that reads as classic and all-white, closer to traditional diamond jewellery, look for Polki-style pieces. If you want more colour — emeralds, rubies, and multicoloured stones set into a warm gold base — Kundan or Polki-Kundan combination pieces will suit you better.
